GIFT GUIDE

Gifts for Tech Obsessives, Gamers & Homelabbers

THE PICK

Phosphor

network monitor display

from $114.99

Buying for a tech person is a minefield: they own everything, they have opinions about everything, and desk trinkets get quietly recycled. The bar is “genuinely useful, aesthetically deliberate, and not another RGB thing.”

This clears it: a little phosphor-terminal instrument that continuously answers the household’s oldest argument. Is it the WiFi, or is it the internet provider?

THE PICK

Phosphor

network monitor display

Phosphor actively probes their network around the clock (pinging the router and the wider internet, testing real connections, timing DNS) and renders the verdict in proper retro-CRT style: HEALTHY, DEGRADED, LAN DOWN, WAN DOWN, or DNS FAIL, with live latency graphs scrolling by.

Before you gift it

December 18 is the last day I will ship holiday orders. Order by Thursday, December 17 to get your holiday orders on time.

What they’ll need

  • A 2.4 GHz WiFi network and its password. Most home routers broadcast one next to their 5 GHz network.
  • A phone or laptop for setup, which runs in its web browser.
  • A USB-A phone charger or a computer’s USB-A port. Every box has a USB-A to USB-C cable, about 3 feet (36 inches), and no wall adapter is included.
  • Nothing to tell it about where they live: Phosphor measures whichever network it joins.

Not sure it will work for them?

Message me on Etsy (opens in a new tab) before you order. Tell me what you know about their WiFi and where they live, and I’ll tell you honestly whether it will work.

If it doesn’t work out, my 90-day maker warranty covers defects, and change-of-mind returns are accepted within seven days of delivery through Etsy, with the buyer covering return shipping. The FAQ has the details.

Once it’s unwrapped, planklabs.us/owners has the setup steps for every gadget.

WHY IT LANDS

What makes this gift work

  • It settles the argument

When the internet dies, the screen says whose fault it is, before anyone has rebooted anything in anger.

  • The stats gamers actually feel

Latency, packet loss, and jitter (the numbers that decide whether game night is smooth or a slideshow), watched continuously.

  • Terminal-core, done right

Phosphor-green (or blue, or orange) monospace glow with a digital-rain boot sequence. It looks like it belongs on a hacker’s desk because it does.

  • Receipts for the ISP call

When the internet dies, the verdict names the broken link. WAN DOWN means the router is fine and the internet beyond it is unreachable, which is exactly what the provider’s support line needs to hear.

GIFT-BUYER QUESTIONS

The things people ask before gifting one

Is it hard for a non-technical person to set up?

No. Setup runs in a phone’s web browser and takes a few minutes. They plug the gadget into USB power, join the setup WiFi network it makes, and its setup page opens on their phone (if it doesn’t, they go to 192.168.4.1 in the browser). There they enter their home WiFi details, and save.

They’re extremely picky about their desk setup. Will this pass?

It was built by exactly that person. The enclosure is a clean 3D-printed shell in six styles (including semi-transparent and glow-in-the-dark), the screen theme comes in three phosphor colors, and there’s no branding glowing at them. It reads as instrument, not gadget-store impulse buy.

Will they get hit with a subscription after I gift it?

No. You pay once on Etsy. There is no monthly fee and no account for them to manage, and free firmware updates arrive over the air on their own.

What does it cost?

The Etsy listing has the current price, enclosure colors and shipping estimate, and the Etsy button on this page opens it. When this page shows a “from” price, that is the listing’s starting price, checked with Etsy within the last few hours. Checkout happens on Etsy with full buyer protection, and I back every unit with a 90-day maker warranty.
