GIFT GUIDE
Gifts for Space Lovers & Backyard Astronomers
Space lovers, stargazers and backyard astronomers are wonderful to shop for in theory and hard in practice. Posters and mugs undersell an interest this genuine, and telescope gear gets specific fast.
The gift that actually lands is an experience: the first time they stand in the driveway at the exact right minute, face exactly the right direction, and watch the International Space Station glide over their house. Most people never see it, because seeing it means knowing the right night, the right minute, and the direction to face. That is Satellite Sentinel’s whole job.
THE PICK
Satellite Sentinel
ISS & Starlink tracker
Satellite Sentinel runs real orbital mechanics on fresh daily data to predict visible ISS passes for their exact location. It counts down on the desk, rates each pass, and takes over the screen with “LOOK NORTHWEST” when it’s time to step outside.

The final price, colors and shipping are on the listing, and checkout stays on Etsy.

Before you gift it
December 18 is the last day I will ship holiday orders. Order by Thursday, December 17 to get your holiday orders on time.
What they’ll need
- A 2.4 GHz WiFi network and its password. Most home routers broadcast one next to their 5 GHz network.
- A phone or laptop for setup, which runs in its web browser.
- A USB-A phone charger or a computer’s USB-A port. Every box has a USB-A to USB-C cable, about 3 feet (36 inches), and no wall adapter is included.
- Setup asks for their US ZIP code and their time zone. Satellite Sentinel works in the United States only.
Not sure it will work for them?
Message me on Etsy (opens in a new tab) before you order. Tell me what you know about their WiFi and where they live, and I’ll tell you honestly whether it will work.
If it doesn’t work out, my 90-day maker warranty covers defects, and change-of-mind returns are accepted within seven days of delivery through Etsy, with the buyer covering return shipping. The FAQ has the details.
Once it’s unwrapped, planklabs.us/owners has the setup steps for every gadget.
WHY IT LANDS
What makes this gift work
-
From fan to eyewitness
It turns “loves space” into “has personally watched the Station fly over the backyard.” Visible passes come in streaks, so how soon depends on the week, and the screen counts down to each one.
-
The math is real
SGP4 orbital propagation on daily-refreshed data, with a visibility filter so it only calls them outside for passes they can actually see.
-
Built-in family event
A pass countdown gets kids (and adults) outside and looking up on a schedule, with no telescope required and city skies included.
-
Something to watch between passes
A 3D globe shows where the Station is right now and the region within sight of it. A separate live map tracks up to 100 Starlink satellites, because one spacecraft was never going to be enough.

GIFT-BUYER QUESTIONS
The things people ask before gifting one
Is it hard for a non-technical person to set up?
No. Setup runs in a phone’s web browser and takes a few minutes. They plug the gadget into USB power, join the setup WiFi network it makes, and its setup page opens on their phone (if it doesn’t, they go to 192.168.4.1 in the browser). There they enter their home WiFi details, plus their US ZIP code and their time zone, and save.
Can you really see the ISS with the naked eye?
Unmistakably. On a good pass the Station outshines everything in the night sky except the Moon and Venus: a bright, steady point crossing the sky in a few minutes, visible even from light-polluted suburbs. The hard part was only ever knowing when and where to look, which is the tracker’s whole job.
Will there be a pass the night they unwrap it?
A visible ISS pass on any given night is not guaranteed, because visible passes come in streaks. A pass is only visible when the sky is dark and the Station is still catching sunlight, which happens in the hour or two around dawn and dusk. In a good stretch there can be visible passes several evenings in a row, then none for days or weeks. Satellite Sentinel lists the next 24 hours of passes with a countdown for each, and between passes its orbit map and day-and-night globe show where the Station is right now.
Will they get hit with a subscription after I gift it?
No. You pay once on Etsy. There is no monthly fee and no account for them to manage. The live data comes from outside sources, so if one changes I make every reasonable effort to keep the gadget working, and free firmware updates arrive over the air on their own.
What does it cost?
The Etsy listing has the current price, enclosure colors and shipping estimate, and the Etsy button on this page opens it. When this page shows a “from” price, that is the listing’s starting price, checked with Etsy within the last few hours. Checkout happens on Etsy with full buyer protection, and I back every unit with a 90-day maker warranty.
