GIFT GUIDE

Gifts for Pro Football Fans

THE PICK

Pro Football Scoreboard

WiFi pro football scoreboard

from $109.99

The football fan in your life already owns the merch. The hoodie, the koozie somebody bought them in 2016, the wall clock with the logo on it: a small museum of allegiance that announces who they root for and then sits perfectly still for the other six days of the week.

The gift that lands is the one that reacts. A logo clock tells the time whether their club is 12–0 or on a bye; this one changes when the ball moves. It ships as a beta edition, which in practice means the firmware keeps improving over the air through the season. Everything described here works today.

THE PICK

Pro Football Scoreboard

WiFi pro football scoreboard

Pro Football Scoreboard spends the week as a desk clock, turning over every few seconds to something else it knows: the countdown to next kickoff, the headlines as they break, the injury report down to Wednesday practice participation, roster moves, division standings, and where their club sits against the playoff line. At kickoff it stops being a clock and shows the game: score, quarter, game clock, timeouts, the drive play by play, and a strip of field showing the line of scrimmage and the line to gain.

Before you gift it

What they’ll need

  • A 2.4 GHz WiFi network and its password. Most home routers broadcast one next to their 5 GHz network. No PlankLabs gadget can join a WPA3-only network, or a network that asks for a username or sends you to a sign-in page, which is common on school and hotel WiFi. A normal home password (WPA2) is fine.
  • A phone or laptop for setup, which runs in its web browser.
  • A USB-A phone charger or a computer’s USB-A port. Every box has a USB-A to USB-C cable, about 3 feet (36 inches), and no wall adapter is included.
  • Setup asks for the club they follow and their time zone.

Not sure it will work for them?

Message me on Etsy (opens in a new tab) before you order. Tell me what you know about their WiFi and where they live, and I’ll tell you honestly whether it will work.

If it doesn’t work out, my 90-day maker warranty covers defects, and change-of-mind returns are accepted within seven days of delivery through Etsy, with the buyer covering return shipping. The FAQ has the details.

Once it’s unwrapped, planklabs.us/owners has the setup steps for every gadget.

WHY IT LANDS

What makes this gift work

  • It picks their side

They choose one of the 32 clubs during setup and every screen reorganizes around it, with clubs named by city and abbreviation in stadium-style digits, readable from across the room.

  • Game day handles itself

It switches to the live board at kickoff on its own, and waits until the game is genuinely over before going back to keeping time. There is no mode to select and no remote to lose.

  • The details the broadcast skips

Practice participation on the injury report, league-wide transactions, the week’s posted lines, and both conferences seeded one through seven with a dashed line drawn between in and out.

  • Not just a Sunday object

The clock face, the headlines, and the ticking countdown to the next kickoff all keep working in the months when nobody is playing.

GIFT-BUYER QUESTIONS

The things people ask before gifting one

Is it hard for a non-technical person to set up?

No. Setup runs in a phone’s web browser and takes a few minutes. They plug the gadget into USB power, join the setup WiFi network it makes, and its setup page opens on their phone (if it doesn’t, they go to 192.168.4.1 in the browser). There they enter their home WiFi details, plus the club they follow and their time zone, and save.

Is it going to be dead weight in February?

That was the design problem, and it is the reason the thing is a clock first. Out of season it keeps the clock, the date, and a countdown to the next kickoff that starts ticking the moment the last game ends, with headlines breaking underneath it year-round and a transaction ledger that gets busy in the spring and busier in August. It follows one club all year and only becomes a scoreboard when there is a game to score. The quiet months are honestly its steadiest stretch of work.

Will they get hit with a subscription after I gift it?

No. You pay once on Etsy. There is no monthly fee and no account for them to manage. The live data comes from outside sources, so if one changes I make every reasonable effort to keep the gadget working, and free firmware updates arrive over the air on their own.
