GIFT GUIDE

Gifts for Pilots, Plane Spotters & Aviation Nerds

THE PICK

Squawk Box

live flight tracker display

from $129.99

Pilots, plane spotters and aviation enthusiasts are easy to spot and hard to shop for. They already own the headset, the sectional-chart poster, and three model 737s, and they will absolutely notice if a gift gets the details wrong.

What they usually don’t have is their own radar. The thing an AvGeek actually wants is the answer to the question they ask out loud several times a day (“what was that one?”), sitting on the desk, already answered, before they’ve thought to reach for their phone.

THE PICK

Squawk Box

live flight tracker display

Squawk Box is a desktop flight tracker with its own 3.5″ touchscreen. It watches the sky around their house out to 25, 50, or 75 miles and draws it the way a controller’s scope would, with up to 25 aircraft in range labeled by callsign, type, altitude, speed, and distance, and colored by altitude. Tap any plane for its operator, tail number, and an hour of altitude history. When something flies close enough to see, the screen tells them which way to face and how high to look. It’s built for watching the sky, not for flight following.

Before you gift it

December 18 is the last day I will ship holiday orders. Order by Thursday, December 17 to get your holiday orders on time.

What they’ll need

  • A 2.4 GHz WiFi network and its password. Most home routers broadcast one next to their 5 GHz network. Squawk Box can’t join a WPA3-only network.
  • A phone or laptop for setup, which runs in its web browser.
  • A USB-A phone charger or a computer’s USB-A port. Every box has a USB-A to USB-C cable, about 3 feet (36 inches), and no wall adapter is included.
  • Setup asks for their city and state or ZIP code, how far out to watch (25, 50 or 75 miles), and their time zone. Squawk Box works in the United States only. Coverage is strongest around cities and major airports and can be thinner somewhere very remote.

Not sure it will work for them?

Message me on Etsy (opens in a new tab) before you order. Tell me what you know about their WiFi and where they live, and I’ll tell you honestly whether it will work.

If it doesn’t work out, my 90-day maker warranty covers defects, and change-of-mind returns are accepted within seven days of delivery through Etsy, with the buyer covering return shipping. The FAQ has the details.

Once it’s unwrapped, planklabs.us/owners has the setup steps for every gadget.

WHY IT LANDS

What makes this gift work

  • It answers the question they always ask

“What was that one?” stops being rhetorical. The plane they just heard is already on the screen, and if it’s close enough to spot, a LOOK UP message tells them exactly where.

  • Real aircraft, not a simulation

Live ADS-B positions for their actual location, refreshed about every 90 seconds and drawn from the broadcasts those planes are making overhead.

  • It looks like the real thing

A circular ATC-style scope with range rings, heading vectors, and controller altitude colors. It reads as instrument, which is exactly the register aviation people respect.

  • Their airspace, quantified

Six rolling hours of stats (unique aircraft, busiest hour, closest approach, most-seen airline) plus lifetime records turn a hobby into a running scoreboard.

GIFT-BUYER QUESTIONS

The things people ask before gifting one

Is it hard for a non-technical person to set up?

No. Setup runs in a phone’s web browser and takes a few minutes. They plug the gadget into USB power, join the setup WiFi network it makes, and its setup page opens on their phone (if it doesn’t, they go to 192.168.4.1 in the browser). There they enter their home WiFi details, plus their city and state or ZIP code, how far out to watch (25, 50 or 75 miles), and their time zone, and save.

Is Squawk Box a good gift for a pilot, a plane spotter or an airplane lover?

Squawk Box suits a pilot, plane spotter or airplane lover who likes watching aircraft from home. It draws the real planes near their house on a small radar scope, with callsign, type, altitude and speed from live ADS-B data. It is not a tool for flying: it is for recreational use, not navigation, flight following or any other operational aviation purpose, and in busy airspace it shows a selection of 25 aircraft, so not every plane always appears.

What should I look for in a flight tracker as a gift?

Check five things: how many aircraft it shows at once, how often it updates, what it costs to keep running, what WiFi it needs, and where it works. Squawk Box shows up to 25 aircraft at once within 25, 50 or 75 miles of the home, updates about every 90 seconds, has no subscription, needs a 2.4 GHz network (it can’t join a 5 GHz-only or WPA3-only one), and works in the United States only. It shows the sky around the home, with no flight-number lookup, so it suits someone who looks up, not someone who wants to follow one flight anywhere in the world.

Will it work where they live, or do they need to be near an airport?

Living near an airport makes it livelier, but it isn’t a requirement. Cruising traffic shows up across most of the country, and the search radius goes out to 75 miles. Coverage leans partly on volunteer receivers, so it’s strongest around cities and major airports and can be thinner somewhere very remote. Someone under a busy approach path will see a packed scope; someone rural will mostly see the high overflights crossing the country.

Will they get hit with a subscription after I gift it?

No. You pay once on Etsy. There is no monthly fee and no account for them to manage. The live data comes from outside sources, so if one changes I make every reasonable effort to keep the gadget working, and free firmware updates arrive over the air on their own.
